This is very nice.

Making the almost perfect genre film for no money, with a small crew. Downey is clearly a talent, one who can make more films like this. But it is not a film for everyone, not even pure genre fans, because Downey demands just a little more from the viewer.

Especially the nice fact that almost nothing is explained will not sit well with everyone. It is probably a consequence of the budget, but on the other hand it is also simply an added value. Because The Head Hunter plays with well-known fantasy and horror elements, but by not explaining anything explicitly you are forced to remain attentive.

Visually it looks great, the soundtrack is also on a high level and the actor also does a very good job. Nice and economical, atmospheric and mysterious. This is a great film, an example for many other directors.

4.0* and a extensive review

Minimalist nothing. The dark medieval fantasy atmosphere is well done and asks for more; But you don't get more than that because the rest is a vague interpretation where you just have to guess what this is actually about. You also never really get to see the creature that the warrior is chasing (a crawling head looking for a body: either the camera looks away, or the image becomes blurry. Faint. Would have worked better as a 15 minute short film. The attempt is admirable, the result is not.

Interesting genre combination between fantasy, horror and drama. Director Jordan Downey may be known among fans for ThanksKilling and its sequel, but The Head Hunter is clearly a different story. It is a gray and grim story that is mainly substantiated through implications. It asks you to keep looking attentively to understand all the context, which has sometimes wanted to pass me by. The elixir, the castle horns that indicate a bounty and the final monster that digs up the body of his daughter were examples that I only realized after the film. Downey makes it difficult for himself by trying to build a reasonably authentic setting with few resources, but he does a more than decent job. The atmosphere is strong and the second half is impressively creative in terms of design. It's a pity that the somewhat disappointing finale has been a long time in the making in terms of pace. Of course it is designed with love, but it is not a really strong climax. In addition, despite Christopher Rygh's good acting, the main character never becomes particularly interesting. In my opinion, The Head Hunter is a very good example of a film that managed to achieve a very cool end result despite the small budget. Make sure you are in the right mood when you start this film, because the slow pace and lack of substantive substantiation require your full concentration.
