The Spy Who Came In from the Cold plot
"Brace yourself for greatness."
A British spy is given an assignment that requires him to get behind the Iron Curtain. It should look like he wants to defect what he possessed and gets locked up. Once accepted into East German espionage circles, he discovers that his mission was just a diversionary maneuver for an entirely different mission.

Martin Ritt, already known for strongly left-wing ideas during the period of the McCarthy communist hunt, here presents a film about espionage during the Cold War, based on John Le Carré's book.
No spectacular action scenes, but rather a human approach to the unreality of espionage work, the fragility of the agreements that are made, the unreliability and the cowardice of those you come into contact with...
Not that easy to follow, but interesting, of course.
Richard Burton is suitable for such a role and acts very well (Did he drink whiskey on set?) and Peter Van Eyck is certainly well cast. Claire Bloom - first seen in Chaplin's "Limelight" (1952) and last seen in "The King's Speech" (2010) ! - is good, but doesn't seem like a perfect partner for a Burton to me.

Now since I saw Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? saw a lot of respect for Richard Burton, but this portrayal is on equal footing.
Also shot in beautiful black and white - perhaps the heyday of black and white and the accompanying lighting. A lot of stills would also work well as a photo.
Add to that a good and unpredictable plot, and you have a good film. 3.5* for now, but I definitely want to see it again.

Complex cold war thriller, shot in atmospheric black and white, about a washed-out British spy (Richard Burton) who accepts a strange final mission. Slow and with an excess of dialogue, but Burton is first-class in the leading role and the subtly developed plot constantly manages to surprise.
