A Bronx Tale plot

"One man lives in the neighborhood, another man owns it."

The righteous Lorenzo tries to keep his nine-year-old son Calogero far away from the criminal but exciting mafia world, where the infamous Sonny plays a major role. When Calogero then witnesses a murder and recognizes the perpetrator in Sonny, his fate seems sealed. Growing up Calogero is mostly around Sonny's environment and enjoys the respect he so deserves. The mafia, much to Lorenzo's chagrin, comes to grips with Calogero, who eventually discovers how ruthless the laws of the street can be.

Still an excellent mafia drama which just can't match the real toppers in this genre. I particularly liked the first 45 minutes with a young Calogero 'C' Anello (played very nicely by Francis Capra). I didn't like the second part with the older Calogero 'C' Anello because of the hassle with the dark girl. I also liked the older Calogero 'C' Anello less than the younger Calogero 'C' Anello (which was also a bit touching). The transition was also quite abrupt, so you couldn't really bond with the older Calogero 'C' Anello.

The story is well put together and also captivating. The execution is also very good and that applies to both the visual and the musical (appropriate to the time frame) part. Partly thanks to the cast, this film is wonderful to watch and especially Chazz Palminteri as mafia boss (one with more or less the soft hand) Sonny LoSpecchio plays very well and convincingly. The other cast such as Robert De Niro (not in a mafia role this time) are also doing well. All in all, just a very good mafia drama that looks good. I thought the scene where Sonny LoSpecchio continuously drives backwards from his hometown to his workplace (about 1 km away)

PS the small role of Joe Pesci was also nice.

Fine, fairly light-hearted crime film in the Bronx of the sixties, in which the love triangle between Sonny, Calogero and his father Lorenzo is central. Calogero looks up to both father figures, but is more attracted to the charismatic mob boss Sonny. Lorenzo is a hardworking honest man who has little to offer materially and loses his grip on his son.

An excellent Chazz Palminteri who plays a nicely fleshed out character as Sonny. A character of which I can hardly judge whether he is a savior of the neighborhood or just the plague. His friendship with Calogero already seems sincere (concerned). Robert De Niro also does an excellent job in another role that we have come to expect from him in these kinds of films. I didn't like Lillo Brancato, but could easily pass for De Niro's son. The resemblance is striking.

Furthermore, a nicely developed plot in which the insecure and impressionable Calogero tries to find his way in life in the difficult neighborhoods of the Bronx. The subplot surrounding his girlfriend Jane paints a nice picture of the tense relationship between whites and blacks. The love affair itself, however, was of little consequence. For the rest a good film, but not as bad as Scarface, Casino or Carlito's way to name a few.

A fun and smooth crime film without Al Pacino and Liotta. but De Niro and Pesci (in a supporting role) are present. Calogero has been interested in the doings of Sonny from an early age, whom he seems to idolize. Until Sonny shoots someone in broad daylight with Calogero as an eyewitness. The police have the gangster lined up and Calogero has to identify the culprit. He doesn't and Sonny is grateful to him. In this way Calogero is included as a kind of second son of Sonny, his father is strongly against this. This love triangle drives an important part of the film.

Another and currently very topical theme is racism. Calogero falls for a black girl as a white Italian. His so-called friends are very racist towards blacks. Conversely, there is also racism when you come to the whites in the black neighborhood. A nice example that the knife cuts both ways.

I thought it was a good movie that is easy to watch. It's not a pure mafia movie, but it doesn't have to be for me. This is a film about how 1 event or moment can change your life forever.
