Beautiful film in which a criminal comes out of prison after five years and has the intention to stay on the right path. One of the better crime dramas with a well-developed main character and a nice decoration (New York, mid-seventies during the disco era). A few exciting scenes culminating in the chase during the final (excellent camera work too). Al Pacino is strong, but Sean Penn manages to steal a few scenes. As far as I'm concerned, Brian De Palma's best film.

Watched Carlito's way again today. That was a while ago. This film is still rock solid and I enjoyed it again! Great acting from Pacino and Penn. Also a beautiful ending scene with an excellent build-up of suspense and a wonderful long tracking shot, with Pacino being chased at the station. Ultimately with the dramatic ending for him as a result. I think this is one of Palma's best. It's a shame he doesn't reach this level anymore.

Wow, does this movie get a 3.90 and consequently a place in the top 100? So seriously overrated. I think it's only mediocre. The story is predictable and cliché. The characters (especially the supporting roles) are wafer thin and meaningless. Gail is the perfect example of this. Unbelievable how little substance you can give to a character that is so important in the story. How can you empathize with the main character if his main motivation is not properly developed?
Well, there are some cool scenes to spot. I'm thinking of the busted drug deal at the beginning of the movie or multiple scenes in the club like the one with Benny Blanco or at the end when Taglialucci's henchmen come for revenge. Strong camera work, super exciting and very tightly directed.
But for every good scene there is at least one bad one. The scene where Carlito knocks on Gail's door and finally kicks in the door really takes the cake. Unbelievable, corny and cringe-inducing bad. Of a level that a B-movie would turn its nose at. And it's certainly not the only flaw. I've often laughed out loud at scenes that would have fit perfectly in an ironic film. And when a ridiculous, corny piece of music is pasted over it, you sometimes really start to wonder if it's all serious at all. However, I fear so...
In short: this is a cliché mafia film with its ups and downs. Not really bad, but certainly not worthy of the top 100 place.

Watching a movie for 144 minutes and not feeling tired at the end and enjoying watching the movie is definitely a sign of a great filmmaker. Brian De Palma is great as Carlito. The scenes are arranged with care and elegance. The mise-en-scène, filming and editing are excellent. The film editing model is an educational class for those interested in cinema. The sequence of the train station and escalators is reminiscent of the movie "untouchables". De Palma and Al Pacino working together again is spectacular. "Sean Penn" has a unique game and is a candidate for this role. Overall, watching the movie is admirable and enjoyable.
