Suppose Sidney Lumet was one of the first to dedicate a film to the psychological consequences of the Holocaust and the deportation of Jews from World War II. Compared to later films, the images of the horror are not so explicit, but a number of short flashbacks make clear what it is about.

Rod Steiger is the eye-catcher in this white-black film with a lot of atmosphere, emotion and tragedy.

I'm not sure, but I think Movsin is right that this is the first film to deal with the post-war trauma of an Auschwitz survivor. As in other films, Sidney Lumet takes the time to carefully reveal how the pawnbroker is slowly but surely wracked with guilt: “Strange, I could do nothing, there was nothing I could do .”
The same powerlessness creeps up on him again at the fatal outcome of the robbery at the end of the film.
Rod Steiger is phenomenal in this role. I see it as one of the Academy's mistakes that that didn't get him further than an Oscar nomination that wasn't cashed in.

Good film about a Jewish pawnbroker who can't give his past in the concentration camp a place. Clearly a product of its time, which may have lost some of its power because of this. The many, short flashbacks work well (especially the scene in the subway and the scene with the prostitute). Rod Steiger does more than excellent in a difficult role.
