What a gem this is then. Ever since I saw The Water Diviner (2014) with Russell Crowe, I wanted to see a good movie about the battle of Gallipoli. This title spoke for itself and I'm glad I finally watched such a compelling war film again. And yet it is 37 years old.

Actually, only a fraction of the film consists of the actual fights, I think the story is told calmly and carefully. Good build up to a dramatic and frustrating climax. More of This!

A film set around the battle for Gallipoli. In terms of subject matter first of all interesting, but unfortunately the film is a lot less. The film mainly revolves around the friendship of Archy and Frank, two sprinters who decide to join the ANZACS and leave for Gallipoli. And that's where the movie goes in a different direction. The build-up is quite mediocre and the film moves at a slow pace. In between it was all too cheerful for me, even though they would eventually go to war. The exercise with the attack was also worked out a bit too funny for me and as far as I'm concerned it didn't amount to much. It's not until the end that it's all about Gallipoli's battle, although it must be said that the way in which it is done is not really interesting when you expect a hard fight. The biggest surprise is in the rather confrontational ending.

I secretly had high expectations. Peter Weir is an interesting director, and the First World War is a subject I'm definitely interested in. Gallipoli was a bit of a disappointment to me though. Mainly because about three quarters of the film deals with the background of a few characters while they are still in Australia and their subsequent stationing in Egypt. And neither of those are particularly interesting, it seems like a fairly light-hearted boys' book story in which people cheer each other up a bit and joke about the war. But it's not an exciting boys' book. Also probably done on purpose to contrast with the brutal reality at the front, but this took me way too long, and something like this has been done much better and much more impressive in many other war films. As far as I'm concerned it only became really worthwhile in the last half hour, but even then it is sparse - the uselessness and futility are well portrayed, as is the grim indifference of the army command, but about fifteen minutes of an exciting image In my opinion, this is not enough to compensate for the lukewarm first hour and a half.
