A Bridge Too Far plot

"Out of the sky comes the screen's most incredible spectacle of men and war!"

It is towards the end of World War II. The Germans have lost most of France and the Allies troops decide to give them the decisive kick. They plan to drop thousands of soldiers in the Netherlands and hold a few key positions there until reinforcements arrive. The most important place is the bridge at Arnhem; when captured, it can block everything from western Germany.

A Bridge Too Far may be a war classic, but I didn't like it much. The biggest problem with this movie is that you don't bond with the characters. Star cast, yes, but they can't save this movie either. It is all much too fragmentary and the film goes from here to there that it is often difficult to know where what is happening now.

Of course it's nice for those who thought this was a good movie, but I was really bored. Despite everything, of course I took the trouble to watch the film to the end. However, it just got duller and duller. The playing time is also a nice minus point, I don't care about 3 hours. It's just that a lot happened in those 3 hours but I didn't care at all. The movie is way too distant.

A Bridge Too Far.

Yay, I like this.

Wonderful war classic that reasonably follows the facts instead of some fictitious nonsense story.

A few weeks ago I bought the Blu-ray with high expectations. I understand that this is not a film that was shot in full HD at the time, but the quality is a bit disappointing. Especially if you compare that to the razor-sharp HD reproductions of Patton (1970) or Battle of Britain (1969).

The patched-up version is in any case better than previous releases and the film simply continues to captivate.

A few years ago I went to Oosterbeek and Arnhem to give myself an idea of the circumstances at the time. Much of the terrain has remained the same and interest in the events has only grown stronger. Even the house where General Urquhart had to hide in the attic from the Germans is still there (Zwarteweg 14).

I can recommend the book (Arnhem) by Martin Middlebrook to those interested who want to read/experience the airborne part of Market Garden in detail.

In any case, this film is a good classic and a welcome addition to my collection.

Very impressive film, where you get the idea that the budget must have been four times what it was (26 million). Especially given the immense star cast. It is all very grand and beautifully filmed, also with real planes and vehicles, in addition to the many parachute landings. The devastation in the city is also impressive. The human factor is preserved through fine renditions, of which Hopkins and Connery are my favorites. Almost every death hurts you anyway. Even the Germans are not one-dimensional. It is also nice to hear real Dutch here and there, just like real German. And without a noteworthy accent too!

At the time the criticism was that it relied too much on the star cast, took too long, was too monotonous, but I don't agree with this. It has not become an Oscar packer because the Allies were in their shirts after all in this failed operation. In fact, this war movie has simply been ahead of its time: not too afraid to show the grimness of war and no war propaganda about brave exploits (although they are certainly shown). Incredibly handsome and underappreciated, a major achievement.
