“Show me the money!”

Jerry Maguire remains an irresistible film. It all looks very nice and Crowe's directing is sublime. The tempo, the music, the characters, the dialogues, the cinematography... It all feels like a warm bath and it is extremely atmospheric. Jerry Maguire is childhood sentiment, but the film hasn't lost any of its original magic for me.

The film opens with Maguire as a sports agent who wants to steer a new course with fewer clients so that he can pay more attention to them. Against the sore leg of the management of course and he is fired, so that he has no choice but to start for himself with one secretary and one client. From a film about a sports agent with a conscience, Jerry Maguire is increasingly becoming a normal rom-com, but because of the wonderful vibe and the chemistry between the actors, it hardly bothers. Cruise is perfectly cast as a charismatic slicker with a conscience and Zellweger has hardly been better than here. What a wonderful actress (still here). Cuba Gooding Jr. is great as a money-hungry football player but Regina King might be even better than his wife. And whatever Jonathan Lipnicki goes on to do in his film career, he will always be remembered as Zellweger's adorable son with the big glasses.[i]"D'you know that the human head weighs 8 pounds?"[/i ]... If the music is also chosen so perfectly, you have a film that remains a real classic for me and that still evokes warm and nostalgic feelings.

Skinny beast.

Not that surprising, because Crowe doesn't immediately have a great track record and looking at the running time and plot of this film I wondered how this 140 minutes should remain interesting. In the end, it just didn't.

I can appreciate Cruise every now and then, but not in this film. Makes noises that it's not neat anymore, his character is as flat as a dime and the ending doesn't come across at all. Zellweger is also in between, because she also knows nothing to teach the romance. If Cuba Gooding Jr. pretty much impresses you the most, then you know it.

Morale is too corny, the romance much too kitsch, sports drama doesn't interest you at all. There are a lot of different things crammed into this film and that helps the pace, but if nothing really captivates then it doesn't help much in the end. One to quickly forget.

1.5*
