“What do you want for you? Just for you?”

“I want to be a good person.”

Beautiful movie. Hallstrom can get lost in too much sentiment and sweetness, but What's Eating Gilbert Grape is perfectly balanced. Gilbert's hopeless existence in a small town in America is well portrayed and Depp is on a roll. Leonardo DiCaprio also delivers an amazing performance as Gilbert's mentally handicapped brother.

The other family members and residents of the small town of Endora are also well portrayed. How Gilbert slowly comes out of his shell through his encounter with Becky (Lewis) is beautiful and is portrayed with a combination of humor, sentiment and the necessary drama. It is also all well balanced which makes it all the more realistic. At the end all the emotional and sentimental brakes are released, but at that point you've grown to care about the characters so much that you're completely on the rollercoaster of emotions. A wonderful movie.

Good.

Film that really only works because of the acting. And I mean DiCaprio. What an insane performance that was. And that at that age. He deservedly received an Oscar nomination for it.

But it's a shame that the film only works because DiCaprio does it so well. Because unfortunately, if you try to look a bit around DiCaprio, the film has terribly little to offer because it is really good.

Some special elements have been added, but it's a shame that it doesn't quite work. Perhaps the film could have put more focus on the situation with DiCaprio himself, because the rest simply doesn't work.

Depp is doing fine otherwise. Just like Lewis & Cates. But DiCaprio completely outclasses the entire cast in his terrifyingly well-executed role. Possibly just about the best role I've ever seen a 19-year-old play. He knows how to impress the most on all fronts, both the comic and the emotional.

Because of him, the film also works emotionally. Visually the film is ok, the images of the town are quite charming and the burning house at the end is also quite nice. For the rest, the visual is not the element that the film focuses on exactly .

High rating because it finally works thanks to DiCaprio, but not a very high rating because everything else doesn't seem to work. The film wants too much, but if everything doesn't work it starts to stand out.

This is a movie that Teejey, a longtime user, really liked. Unfortunately I can't see his voices anymore but this movie was in his top 10 that I can remember. We had a few mutual favorites so I had to check this one out too. So that's what happened with this one.

It's a beautiful film about what a family is like, how they treat each other, how they argue, how they have fun, how they feel ashamed of each other, how sometimes things get difficult and you want to leave. The film itself has few very memorable moments. However, you will not soon forget the film because of DiCaprio's mother and the acting performance. What a genius role! When you see Depp acting, it seems rather that he had to come out of his shell. I didn't find it very sentimental, but it is a beautiful film. Very pure about everyday things in life. Even in a place like Endora where little is experienced, you can still make a nice film about what really matters in life.
