When Bobby's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere while on the run from some bookies, he ends up stuck in a nearby village. After dating a young married woman, her husband hires Bobby to kill her. Later, however, she hires Bobby to kill him.

“Is everyone in this town on drugs?”
A sultry and atmospheric film. Sean Penn plays a man who is subject to Murphy's Law. Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. Wonderful roles from Penn, Nolte, Thornton, Phoenix, Voight and Jennifer Lopez. Murder, adultery, theft, incest etc. Nothing is too crazy in the small town of Superior, Arizona. Sean Penn's personal hell. Not even Miss Lopez can change that. But it is certainly a party for the viewer.

Watched the film for the second time, now in company.
And to my surprise I found the film better than the first time, that was in the year of publication. Often a second acquaintance with someone, something or a film is a disappointment because you see it better and clearer. But our main character Bobby played by Sean Penn really plays the stars of heaven.
I've always found Penn to be one of the better actors and in movies he comes across as I probably prefer to see myself 
. Independent, determined and clear.

I saw this movie when it had just come out and loved it then! Finally did a re-watch today and... I still think it's just as good. A small town somewhere 'in the middle of nowhere' with retarded hillbillies and stupid sluts, a sultry atmosphere, dangerous gangsters who want their money... There is tension in U Turn, funny dialogues, action, sex, adultery, murder... what more could you want? You really feel for Bobby (Sean Penn), who gets stuck in this hellhole! Billy Bob Thornton as dishonest garagist Darrell is almost unrecognizable, I actually only recognized him to his voice. Also good roles from Jon Voight and Nick Nolte. They all play their part very over the top and that's what makes it so funny! Also a young Joaquin Phoenix as a jealous boyfriend really got a laugh! Jennifer Lopez is, of course, the perfect temptress. She was much more beautiful then with her dark hair and tanned skin than she is today with her bleached hair and light skin, much more natural. You would almost kill for such a beauty! If you like films in the genre of Red Rock West (1993) and Wild at Heart (1990), then this film is a must.
