A nice psychological thriller. Too much is given away to get the genre mystery as far as I'm concerned. But enough puzzle material to give the thriller a good psychological effect. Chapeau for the end, which can be called somewhat un-American.

The downside is that the film didn't really stand the test of time. It all looks simple, even for a 1999 film you can expect more. That's why I'm stuck at a (decent) *3.5.

Arlington Road didn't start out so special, but in the end managed to surprise very positively. The film successfully builds suspense and mystery and contains very good moments of Suspense.

A terrorism expert, who lost his wife a few years ago in a botched FBI operation, gets new neighbors. Suspecting that his neighbor has something to hide, he digs into his past.

Jeff Bridges has a strong lead and really takes you into his character's frustration. Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack also played well as the secretive neighbors.

The film is well shot. Lots of boring shots with mediocre composition but as the film progresses also some strong close-ups and Hitchcock-like zooms. The film actually came across very Hitchcockian at all. The suspense and the way the sweet neighbor suddenly becomes terrifying is very reminiscent of The Master of Suspense. Great music by Angelo Badalamenti, but not as good as his work for [i]Twin Peaks[/i ].

There were some improbabilities in the story, but for this genre it was unbelievably bad for me. Also strong that real attacks from that time are incorporated in the film. We pretend it's so bad these days, but we forget that there were many more major attacks in the second half of the 20th century than there are now.

All in all, an exciting and compelling Thriller that is more than worth watching.

Exciting film with a very strong role by Jeff Bridges. At the start of the film and by taking a vague look at the poster, I was actually expecting a completely different film. I expected it to be filmed darker, but I was completely wrong. So I had expected a lot of atmosphere, but it is more the story here that keeps the film so captivating.

Tim Robbins always plays well and is excellently cast here. I think he's one of those actors that's hard to see through. Is he a bad person now or is he good? He can perfectly play a family man but also a psychopath at the same time.

The film plays for a very long time with the question is the neighbor who he says he is and can I trust him? Little by little Bridges solves the puzzle around his neighbor and the ending is quite surprising. The director shows some guts here. Eventually I figured out what was going to happen just before it happened. Delicious twist.
