The Insider plot

"Two men driven to tell the truth … whatever the cost."

'60 Minutes' producer Lowell Bergman smells a story when Jeff Wigand, a former researcher at tobacco company Brown & Williamson, refuses to talk to him. When the manufacturer forces Wigand to fulfill an agreement, he decides to confide in Bergman and reveal the truth about his employer. However, both Bergman and Wigand find out that this is not as easy as thought.

Despite being based on a true story, the film is very exciting. Al Pacino and (especially) Russel Crowe play the stars of heaven. The film might be a bit too long for some people (just under three hours), but I didn't mind the length, it continues to fascinate. The Insider gets four stars from me.

Fascinating acting duel between three greats with vastly different acting styles. Russell Crowe, Al Pacino and Christopher Plummer star here and Bruce McGill and Gina Gershon impress in their supporting roles. The telephone confrontation between Pacino and Crowe is a highlight, but also the moment when Plummer (as Mike Wallace, the host of 60 Minutes) withdraws his support for Pacino (as editor Lowell Bergman). Michael Mann punctuates the film with paranoia, sometimes bordering on claustrophobia, and in doing so he almost puts down a masterpiece. Almost, because the scenario focuses too much on Lowell in the second half and thus pushes the whistleblower's more penetrating story too much into the background. Al Pacino is flawless, but his character is just less interesting dramatically.
