Saw it again last night on Belgium 1. Even if you know the story, A Simple Plan remains a fascinating thriller. In my opinion even a small masterpiece. Not only is the plan simple, so is the film itself. It is precisely the lack of complicated and far-fetched (secondary) plots that makes A Simple Plan a very believable story. And the acting performances of Thornton and Paxton in particular ensure that you will not be bored for a second. One comment (because no film is 100% perfect) without spoiler: I don't quite understand the ending between the brothers Hank and Jacob.

I give this movie a very big 9.

Men who work themselves further and further into trouble, that initially seems to be the motor of the film. It is the reason for the clash between the sometimes unpredictable main characters. This sometimes makes for emotionally weighing scenes, such as the dialogue between Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton in the car. Some main characters do step over the value of a human life very quickly, which made it a bit difficult for me to fully empathize with the characters. The denouement felt a bit too much like a mechanical construction rather than a logical consequence of the previous events. But as a whole, the film was able to captivate me because of the atmosphere, the snow landscapes provide a claustrophobic atmosphere, and there is a striking extra role for a lot of photogenic crows.

Just thought it was an illogical connection. The way in which Hank spontaneously makes a U-turn about whether or not to report the money found, his wife who does that in the superlative, also the woman who spontaneously turns into the criminal mastermind of the group. Then discussing a plan again just after they hug their newborn child for the first time... anyway also going back to the crime scene to put some of the money back is laughable. There was no way that, should the plane ever be found, this group would be identified as a suspect. Whether there's half a million or nothing. So this was asking for trouble and they came. Finally, burning the money; also totally illogical. There are plenty of alternatives to consider. Enough islands in the Caribbean, for example, that accept the USD as a means of payment without taking any further risk.

I expected a bit more from the plot and the average, but it was all very unrealistic to me and I didn't get into the movie.
