October Sky plot

"Sometimes one dream is enough to light up the whole sky."

Homer Hickam grew up in the 1950s in the mining village of Coalwood. He has only one future ahead of him: working at the local coal mine, just like his father. However, when the first satellite Sputnik is launched in October 1957, everything changes. Homer is inspired to learn how to build rockets, even though most of the village thinks it's bullshit. However, there is one teacher who supports Homer and his friends. This directs them to a national science competition that they can participate in.

Dr Von Braun is a great scientist... but he's not my hero!

Beautiful beautiful movie. So moving that I was left with wet eyes. The film also had some of my favorite actors up its sleeve, a fantastic Chris Cooper and the ever-refreshing Laura Dern so it couldn't go wrong. Gyllenhaal does not disappoint either and creates a very strong father-son relationship. Sons who want to make their fathers proud of them and fathers who are the heroes of their sons… that always moves me, and here it is beautifully executed. Father is a miner and wants to see his son in the mine too, because it has been this way for generations. He doesn't understand that a future can also be built on the passion for something, in this case building rockets. The four "Rocket Boys" start with very little and get very far by trial and error. They are also lucky to have Mrs. Riley support them and believe in their drive and talent.

In the end, the feel-good comes into play in every way, but it's not fake and is added almost spontaneously. There is a laugh (that scene where the boys remove a train track ), a tear, some wise reflections, a sometimes infectious tenderness, suddenly a beautiful dialogue that is thrown in between, ... for me a 5* movie.

Bought this film at a flea market for 1 euro. Actually about Laura Dern. I always find her to be so pure and real in movies. In this film she doesn't play such a big role, but is back on track again. The boys all play really well too, but the mother (Natalie Canerday) really stood out to me. What an actress. It's a funny story, apparently true. Well, definitely fun to watch.

A moving film that not only reflects that passion for science, but also manages to build an incredibly beautiful relationship between son and father. Coming of age that can be an inspiration for many other young people. Go for a diploma and make something of your life. It's not easy, not for anyone, but those who don't give up will get there. Always.

I have always thought Gyllenhaal is a great actor and is rarely seen in a weak film. I wouldn't immediately call Laura Dern my favorite actress, but here she plays unparalleled. Chris Cooper also plays his part flawlessly and I can't think of anyone who could have done this better.

As a lover of astronomy and science in general, I thought this was a wonderful film. I will therefore also put it in my top 10 because I think everyone should see this film. I just can't believe this October Sky doesn't even have 500 votes.
