Young Francis Ouimet sees his dreams shattered when a promise to his father prohibits him from playing golf. Despite the fact that the end of the film is as well known, this remains a story that captivates, not least because of the very decent interpretations and settings.
The fight of the underdog against the favorite and the emotional outcome that can accompany it remains a favorite subject and this film, which does not fail to emphasize the objectionable class distinctions, which also have an impact in sport, takes full advantage of this .
Charming and enjoyable film, hopefully also for those who find Disney productions too soft.

Pretty nice, for a Disney, a game of golf has never been so exciting. It plays well, it all looks great and the music is beautiful too. Disney can do all that, unfortunately it is all exaggerated again and the end is no surprise. But well worth it.

There are those stories in sports history that are so romantic and so wonderful that they cry out for a film adaptation. The account of Francis Ouimet [Shia Labeouf], the 20-year-old amateur who won the US Open Golf in 1913 after a play-off against top British golfers Ted Ray [Stephen Marcus] and Harry Vardon [Stephen Dillane], therefore offers all ingredients for an old-fashioned feel-good movie.
Francis comes from a simple working-class family, but when a golf course is built opposite their house, he quickly becomes fascinated by the game and regularly works as a youthful caddy. When he acquires a golf club, he practices endlessly in his room and in the garden. When the golf course turns out to be the site of the Amateur Championships, Francis sets his sights on victory in hopes of qualifying for the US Open so that he can take on his idol, 'The Stylist' Harry Vardon. But he gets a lot of opposition from the club, but also from his father [Elias Koteas] who thinks it's just a waste of time.
Mark Frost's screenplay showcases the unique qualities of legends Ted Ray (who saved himself from the most impossible situations with his incredible technique) and Ray Vardon (whose way of holding the club is still the standard) and director Paxton manages to capture the golf scenes in a visually interesting way. It's all historically correct, including the key role of ten-year-old caddy Eddie Lowery [Josh Flitter], but the finale could have been less reverent and well-behaved in my opinion.
