3:10 to Yuma plot

"The lonesome whistle of a train... bringing the gallows closer to a desperado... the showdown nearer to his captor!"

Rancher Dan Evans witnesses Ben Wade and his gang rob a stagecoach and kill one of the guards. Next, the outlaws head for the nearest town of Bisbee, where Ben Wade finds his old flame Emmy behind the bar in the saloon. When Wade's gang members leave for Mexico with the loot, Wade is left with Emmy. Being with Emmy is fatal for Wade, because he is arrested in the saloon. Butterfield then offers Dan Evans $200 to take Wade to Contention City, from where he has to take Wade to Yuma Jail on the 10:45 train. A psychological cat and mouse game between Evans, Wade and his gang begins when Evans and Wade wait in a hotel room for the train to Yuma. Wade even offers Evans $10,000 if he lets him go.

This 3:10 to Yuma has been in my collection for a long time next to the remake from 2007. I thought the remake was a great western and I therefore had expectations for this one.

They didn't quite come out, the original gets off to a slow start and only manages to live up to its status towards the end.

A whopper of a movie. The storyline starts from classic elements - catching a crook and the challenge to transport him - but I still experience it as fresh. It revolves around the opposing values of Van Heflin and co vs. Glenn Ford, which takes shape in a very natural way in the dialogues, sharp and on the edge and at times with flashes of black humor. Glenn Ford challenges in two ways. Mentally he plays games with Van Heflin and the other supervisors, who form an average citizenry (from diligent workers to drunks). But Glenn Ford goes much further than that when it turns out that he has a magnetic attraction for the wives of the righteous (from singles to stay-at-home moms). The seduction scenes also run like the proverbial train (to Yuma in this case) with Ford perhaps commanding respect from many viewers for his approach.
I did have some reservations about the final jump of Van Heflin and Ford on the train, and Ford's decision not to escape, but well an explanation is given.
And when the rain finally falls, it has a very discharging effect. A happy ending as if the hero gets the girl.

Above all, the film is beautifully portrayed by Delmer Daves & co. Performed in b&w with care for the play of light and shadow, furthermore beautiful long shots in that inviting wide landscape. And a great music score too. Yep, it all falls into place here.
