I found him as an alcoholic, and her as a prostitute downright unbelievable. Then you can throw in a few kilos of jazzy music and some neon lights for the atmosphere... it just doesn't work.

The reaction of that hotel owner to breaking that table, that was actually the only striking moment in this mediocre film.

Not quite convinced of the chemistry between Cage and Shue. It already starts a bit because of Cage's overacting in the beginning. Obviously that's what he's best at, but it doesn't exactly make him likeable. He tells the typical drunken talk and harass women. In fact, he does all kinds of small things that are actually unacceptable. Then he meets Sera, quite by chance, and they just as coincidentally end up in a kind of relationship where they love each other without getting annoyed at each other. They take each other as they are and that's probably important in any relationship, but if this is pretty much the moral of the story, it's pretty disappointing. Of course it's not quite but if you really want to make the movie strong, they would fight for each other to go for a better life. Now we get a depressing movie and a very predictable ending that, frankly, I didn't care.

I also didn't think the music was very appropriate, I would also think that it was a bit overdone. It doesn't feel quite balanced to create the right atmosphere. Jazz is the genre for atmosphere but is often not well timed here. Just like I didn't find the story quite balanced. Eventually the makers seem to get this too and have Shue raped and beaten up by a gang of crazy bastards to get some attention around her situation. Despite Shue being a pretty lady and certainly in those sexy outfits, I can't get around the fact that it's all a bit too much. Even what Cage is supposedly drinking here in alcohol, even 5 people can't even drink without ending up in a coma.

Then we have what is really missing and that is background on both characters. There may be room for suggestion but we know next to nothing about their past. This, in my opinion, suffers greatly from this.

Nice movie! I am very impressed with it. I found it at the thrift store and I wasn't sure if I'd like it. I'm glad I bought it. In terms of story, it's really my thing. I was completely absorbed in it, partly because of the beautiful and matching music that enhances the gloomy and compelling atmosphere. Strong acting. It touched me. A favourite! 5*
