A strong thriller with some drama elements here and there and sometimes even horror because of the bizarre/macabre hallucinations. Tim Robbins plays a convincing lead role as a man scarred by the Vietnam War. Funny how people can keep it obscured for quite a long time whether everything is happening in his head or whether he is already dead. The subplot surrounding the dead son Gabe (played by Macauley "Home Alone" Culkin is initially strong. After the conclusion, however, the usefulness remains a bit shrouded in mystery, albeit again nicely made up that he supposedly joins his son in the afterlife.
Also many well-known heads in supporting roles such as Jason Alexander, Ving Rhames, Danny Aiello and Matt Craven. Partly due to their sometimes somewhat subtle contribution, this has become a pretty strong print.
Watched because I came across it in a list of the "best 90s horror movies", but this movie offers much more than that. A decent film that exposes a debatable piece of American Vietnam history.

Seen for the third time and once again completely convinced of the good script, the many ambiguities, the truly wonderful atmosphere and subtle scary/scare moments. Robbins convinces for the umpteenth time and I'm actually surprised that the film is so little known. The film has not had much airtime in its nearly thirty years of existence. Twice on an English channel, and twice on the Belgians. As far as is known, it has never been broadcast in the Netherlands. Also noteworthy that it came to the cinema only five years after its release.

Well, impressed again. An upgrade in grade is in order in my opinion.
