State of Grace plot

"… where crime is a family affair."

Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) returns as an undercover cop to his old neighborhood, New York's infamous "Hell's Kitchen" neighborhood to settle a score. He is bent on arresting a tough Irish mob family led by Frankie Flannery (Ed Harris) and his hot-headed brother Jackie (Gary Oldman). When Noonan infiltrates the family, he heads for a violent confrontation, heightened by his flaring feelings for Flannery's sister (Robin Wright Penn).

This movie deserves more attention than it got/gets. A wonderful mafia movie with raw action and exploding bags of cherry juice everywhere. It started off well with Gary Oldman who was in great shape and occasionally very witty. Then we have his brother in the movie, Ed Harris, who plays a bit as usual in a role that suits him well. And then of course we have the protagonist himself, Sean Penn, I haven't seen him play too often but I will definitely be looking for more of him. The film offers Robin Wright (well known from House of Cards) as a female beauty, but she was so beautiful in the 90s.

The story was still fairly simple but everything that could be extracted is taken out of it. The ending is a bit over-the-top and I was sad that it ends at the shootout in the bar. I would have loved to have seen what happened next between Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) and Kate (Robin Wright). The soundtrack is not to be faulted as it is written by the great Ennio Morricone himself.

Nice crime film with Sean Penn and Gary Oldman in their younger years... The two gentlemen already built up their charms as criminals. Although... Sean Penn is undercover.

It is also an old crime story that you can almost dream of... just keep in mind that this is from 1990 already. The atmosphere is grim, the characters convincing... Robin Wright Penn also provides some tender moments so far... And of course Ed Harris is also unforgettable.

The film flows nicely. Gives a neo-noir feeling... and the action scenes are very well shot... A little bit of John Woo editing if you ask me.

Great crime movie.

Solid mafia film about betrayal and fratricide. Emotions regularly run high, especially when hot-tempered Gary Oldman comes into the picture.

These kinds of roles are naturally made for Sean Penn. Nice that the romance between him and Robin Wright got an extension in real life. Nice soundtrack again from Morricone.
