Zombieland: Double Tap plot
Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock have settled in nicely in Zombieland and together manage to find a safe haven... in the White House. But personal tensions mount and the Wichita and Little Rock sisters choose to take a break. Columbus and Tallahassee decide to try to reunite the team and follow the ladies towards Graceland, only to discover during their journey that the zombies they've always been in control of are getting harder and harder to take out.

It's somehow painful when the funniest, most original jokes can be found in the opening and closing credits. About ten years after the first part, 'Zombieland: Double Tap' (2019) no longer manages to come out as refreshing. It also doesn't help that the zombie threat is an afterthought and much of the comedy comes down to the personal relationships between the characters. And the (dysfunctional) family relationship between Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock is not that interesting at all. Lots of bickering, predictable romantic entanglements and encounters with annoying supporting roles. At some point, it dawned on me that the list of survival tips became a recurring gimmick. Like a meta wink that isn't really clever at all or that adds something essential to the narrative. The same goes for the zombies themselves, who have evolved into different species since the last film: the dumb Homers, the clever Hawking's, the stealthy ninjas, and the indestructible T-800s. But their presence does little for the tension and never breaks through the nothing to worry about atmosphere. With two decent action scenes and an abundance of blandness, 'Zombieland: Double Tap' (2019) offers too little to justify a sequel. You wait a decade for that!?

Good sequel.
Loved the first movie, but wasn't really looking forward to a sequel. Not that easy either, because the first one mainly managed to play on the surprise. Very self-conscious, but also just a fun and dirty horror.
Therein lies the biggest problem for this film. The surprise is a bit off, so Fleischer just tries to go bigger and bolder. At least, in terms of humor anyway, because the balance has shifted slightly. This is really just a full-blooded comedy, within a zombie setting. In terms of gore it's not too bad, but unfortunately it's not dirty or really over the top.
Quite funny in terms of humor, but also a bit too self-conscious. A bit tiring at times to see how much fun the film finds itself. Certainly a few funny finds and nice new additions to the cast, but as a whole it feels just a bit too forced to match the original. Or it's just on the same level, but just a little less fun 10 years later. I would have to watch the first movie again for that.
Enjoyed further. Top notch entertainment, but that's about it.
