No-nonsense & grindhouse-like interpretation of the classic zombie film with montages that are therefore also reminiscent of Tarantino. The fun content is high but there is still enough tension & gore to speak of a horror film. Eisenberg comes across as sympathetic and clumsy, Stone is cool, Harrelson is of course just playing himself. The cameo from Bill Murray is a pleasant surprise; and a movie like this gets away with that scene's conclusion without any problem. Nice nice.

Less revision.

Watched him mainly because the sequel Double Tap was very good in terms of entertainment. Then it occurred to me that I didn't remember much about this part and when it was available again on Film1 I just set it up for review. I have to conclude that the second part has tasted better for me.

The film opens wonderfully in which the rules are introduced followed by nice editing at the opening credits. I was already sitting back to be entertained by zombie violence and humor. But what came next was a bit disappointing.

The jokes in general were just a little less effective. There are nice ideas and enough clichés that are poked fun at, but they are not very funny. A real airy feeling, which I did get with the second part, is also missing here. I don't really have to laugh in spite of enough clumsy attempts.

Acting is not brilliant, but Eisenberg and Harrelson remain a nice duo. Two good actors, so you can certainly expect acting from them. Stone and Breslin are less impressive and have to rely more on the charisma they have than the acting talent unfortunately.

In terms of horror, there is little memorable except for the amusement park sequence in the final phase. That is also the highlight of the film where the best ideas are brought out. Everything that comes before that is a bit on the tame side, horror that doesn't really want to impress. The assembly also lacks a certain smoothness and the barrel some airiness. Something I found a lot more successful in the second part.

A disappointing review. I still give it a pass, but lower the vote with a 0.5*. I do notice that Fleischer's talent has grown over the years.

A masterful comedy (sorry, I really can't call it horror) with elements of a parody of the horror genre. Dry, subtle humor, well acted, surprising, lots of chemistry between the actors. Not your standard comedy, so don't expect underpants fun and over the top lame jokes. It's all just a little more subtle. There is also a lot that happens in the relationships between the main characters that makes the film interesting. Brilliant references to other films with a surprising cameo. The fusion of horror and comedy doesn't often work out well, but Zombieland is an exception. I don't get it often, but this time really 5 stars.
