Powerful film about Western journalists kidnapped by IS in Syria. The film focuses on the Dane Daniel Rye, a naive idealist who, as a photographer, experienced 13 hellish months in captivity. The film indeed takes you back to the time when IS was still so strong and dominated the news every day.

It was also interesting that the unfortunate journalist David Foley was processed in the film. Just because he was an American, it was almost impossible to get him released. Also fascinating and also well put together in terms of editing was the suffering on the home front where the family feverishly tries to collect ransom money. What often happens in films with different locations or times is that the poor editing takes you out of the film. That was not the case here.

All in all a sober film with no patriotic heroic scenes or music. Also no messages of revenge or retaliation. Mainly the helplessness that came up in almost every scene. Strong ending also in New Hampshire during the funeral of Foley.

Esben Smed shines in this shocking film about the hostage-taking of a young press photographer by barbaric fighters of ISIS. The film occasionally calms down a bit when it switches to the home front in Denmark. Another top film by director Niels Arden Oplev with oppressive images.

It was only a matter of time before a film would be made about the foreign IS hostages in Syria. This Scandinavian production is of high quality and shows different sides of the hostage situation of Daniel Rye, a young journalist who ends up in the clutches of the "Beatles", a small group of terrorists with the infamous Jihadi John among them, for those who still remember that executioner.

It is a hard film at times. A bit harder than I expected. The physical and psychological torture is not shunned and the scenes are unnerving. The fate of those journalists should not be forgotten. Thanks to their courage and perseverance, the light continues to shine on the world. The other side is the family that is desperately trying to scrape together millions to get Daniel released. That scene in which the industrialist refuses to contribute actually made me angrier than the terrorists but in the end the man spoke his conscience. The fact is that paying ransom to terrorists is still a thorny subject for the government, where no option seems to be the right one.

Strong biopic, well played and does not overdo it with sentiment, which you sometimes have with Scandinavian films. Who has the opportunity: definitely watch it.
