The Station Agent plot

"Loneliness is much better when you have got someone to share it with."

Finbar McBride is very fond of trains and therefore repairs trains in a model shop. When the owner of that shop suddenly dies, he inherits an old station depot from him. Out of necessity, he decides to move into this house. Fin is particularly small and is considered a "dwarf" by many people. Not a day goes by that he is not checked. He has no problem with that himself, because he doesn't look for the problems. However, when he moves into the depot, he becomes entangled with the local residents. Fin's height just seems to draw attention at first glance. However, a close bond with a number of local residents quickly develops. In particular with Olivia, an artist who is trying to come to terms with her divorce, and with Joe, a cooking talent who knows how to prolong any discussion.

A small film, and one that is fun and light-hearted and nice to look away. It has a nice easy pace and also has some depth in terms of human reactions and interactions. The three protagonists carry the film and of the short duration every minute is used. Drama and comedy are nicely balanced. Towards the 3.5*.

Excellent film about a train buff who inherits a small station that is no longer in use. The beginning shows well what it is like to go through life as a small person. Furthermore, this is simply a beautiful film about friendship and allowing people into your life. A slow pace, charming characters and a fine cast. A successful directorial debut from Tom McCarthy.

Small minimalistic film about friendship and trust. The three main characters grow closer as the film progresses. All carry their backpacks and therefore mistrust other people, although Joe is always very open, but rarely lets his soul see. The latter applies even more to Finbar, who is weighed down by his stature and especially the blunt reactions he gets. He then isolates himself from everything and everyone. His only passion is training. It is the key to get through to him and gain his trust.

Not much happens in the movie. The minimal character development is understated and serene. Excellent acting by all. It's also nice to keep spotting Michelle Williams, I would have liked to see something more prominent in the picture. A film that is sad, but also heartwarming. That Bobby Cannavale, the character Joe, in his enthusiastic way brought some lightness to the film so that the balance was right.
