A rare brilliant debut. Where many other Italian greats within the genre (Fulci, Mario Bava, Deodato...etc) often messed with cheap schlock at the beginning of their career, Argento immediately set a new standard. He managed to combine many well-known Giallo elements in such a tasteful and ingenious way that it instantly became the new standard and this genre really got off the ground. He made the difference between krimi and giallo clear once and for all. In addition, deals in deep layers with interesting and dark themes, including captivity, voyeurism and also gender roles. The scene in which Sam has to watch helplessly while the victim crawls and begs for help is one of the best scenes in his oeuvre. With a major role for art, sexualization of violence, intriguing and overlapping themes, full of stunning compositions and spine-chilling murders, this is an Argento masterpiece at heart. Only the icing on the cake is missing: a Goblin soundtrack.

After "Profondo Rosso" I had a look at this one. Same problem: "old Derrick episode" level acting and plot. I also found the twist at the end weak: the husband had already been portrayed so emphatically as the suspect, that something like this was entirely in line with expectations. Furthermore, strange investigative methods, among others that a casual passer-by may work directly with the murder commission as a kind of private detective.
Again I say that it may have made an impression in the 70's, but now it's hard to sit out. It has its own style, though. Then "Suspiria" will be my last attempt.

You saw a guy in a yellow jacket ? Yes..in there..

Finally saw Argento's debut and I didn't expect it to be this good. What a tension he can create with music, color and his stylish shots (that shot in the stairwell...), one of the kings of horror.

We follow a writer who witnesses a murder and ends up in a cat and mouse game with the perpetrator, with beautiful Rome in the background. Please don't read any more about the story. As far as I'm concerned, a real masterpiece, a deep bow to Argento, unfortunately they no longer walk around like that..
