Wat een asshole. Niet te geloven.

Tim Heidecker speelt zijn rol vrij geweldig, het moet gezegd. Het is lang geleden dat ik zo'n irritante arsloch heb gezien. Toch sluipt de menselijkheid er naar verloop van tijd in, of projecteren we die zelf omdat we die graag willen zien? Swanson laat zijn collegaatje die hij op het punt stond te gaan bepotelen zonder met zijn ogen te knipperen stuiptrekken, wanneer ze plots een (epileptische?) aanval krijgt. Hij verveelt zich zelf terwijl haar lichaam zich in pijnlijke kronkels wringt, en lijkt zowat te knikkebollen nu zijn eigen plannetje eventjes op de tocht is komen te staan door een ongevraagde bijkomstigheid.

Ik had overigens nog nooit van Tim & Eric gehoord, maar in 2001 was ik al gestopt met TV kijken, dus ik heb van cartoon network en adult swim niet veel meegekregen. Of ik nieuwsgierig geworden ben hierdoor weet ik niet, ik was gebiologeerd door dit mankind en zijn interacties, maar voor mijn gevoel is er niet veel arc aan zijn karakter, en de film voelde wat onaf en onevenwichtig toen de credits begonnen. De triestheid van zijn bestaan is evident, maar voor mij is het niet genoeg om van The Comedy een geslaagde film te maken.

Ik ben niet opgegroeid met Dylan's muziek. Mijn ouders luisterden het niet, en de paar hitjes die er in onze van napster of kazaa geplukte winamp playlist stonden al tiener, zijn nooit gebrand op de compilatie cd-r's die we in die tijd nog wel eens samenstelden. Wat de oldies betreft was ik meer van de Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Collins/Genesis, Michael Jackson en Queen.

Ook toen ik later serieuzer met muziek bezig ging en dorstig op zoek ging naar nieuwe dingen waar men lyrisch over was, deed Dylan het nooit echt voor mij. Hij bleef altijd meer een artiest waarvan ik de muziekhistorische waarde begreep en erkende, dan dat ik die ook voelde. Ik hield niet van zijn stem, en vond het maar ongepolijst. Vloeken in de kerk hier wellicht, maar dat is hoe het is. Na Mangold's Walk the Line ben ik wel direct op zoek gegaan naar Johnny Cash's muziek, en die luister ik nu nog. Ik was benieuwd of hij dat met Dylan ook voor elkaar kon krijgen, zeker gezien hij de getalenteerde Timothée Chalamet voor de hoofdrol had weten te strikken.

Het korte antwoord is nee. Het was leuk om te zien hoe zo'n jonge singer/songwriter barst van het talent en hoe zijn roem explodeert, maar muzikaal gezien blijft het bij beleefde bewondering. Chalamet en Barbaro (als Joan Baez) spelen heel sterk, maar het script en Mangolds regie laten het echt afweten, en doen weinig interessants en nauwelijks een poging het fenomeen Dylan te ontleden of echt te contextualiseren. Dat hij een nogal een hufter is, helpt ook niet mee, en Elle Fannings karakter heeft in de hele film maar één echt sterke scène; voor de rest is er nauwelijks agency en hangt ze er zoals hierboven aangestipt, 'maar wat bij'. Ed Norton daarentegen is overigens heel ontwapenend en lief hier, dat verraste wel.

Een erg moeilijke film om te waarderen merk ik. Ik houd het op een zesje, en hoop dat de Oscar naar een andere titel gaat.

Los van de dingen die me iets storen aan deze films, heb ik eveneens gekraaid van plezier. Het beste dat ik van Flash Point kan zeggen is dat de film me de realisatie bracht dat ik eigenlijk te weinig van dit soort films kijk. Strak in beeld gebracht, met martial arts van iemand op de top van zijn kunnen. Top het punt dat je je afvraagt hoe ze het in 's hemelsnaam hebben gedaan. Eigenlijk jammer dat mijn smullen van Yip Man me niet bij deze samenwerking van Wilson Yip en Donnie Yen heeft gebracht.

Maar die fout maak ik niet nog eens, ik ga gelijk Saat Po Long (2005) kijken. Vrij dagje met vrouw aan het werk en kind op KDV, pappa kijkt lomp knokwerk!!!
