Asian cinema may have been in the spotlight for a while now, but the sector has yet to gain any real momentum.

This is the new project of Yip and Yenneke. Two gentlemen whose names now resound with awe when it comes to HK action cinema. And rightly so.

Yen brings something new to the action world. After the ballet of Li (and companions) and the hard ballet of Jaa, Yen is simply hard. A real basher, but with flawless technique. A whirlwind who is technically very strong and also does his thing very well in tiny spaces. From swinging punches to sneaky throws and spectacular locks. What else than the half-drunk antics of Chiba.

Wilson Yip is smart enough to put this into a flashy whole, which gives the film a distinctly bite-sized atmosphere, but the fights still come through nicely.

Disadvantage here I found that the story got a bit too much attention, something that is traditionally not high-quality with this kind of films. Visually it is often beautiful, especially the night scenes radiate atmosphere. Furthermore it is slick and occasionally a bit boringly portrayed when there is no action. Hence also criticism of the script.

It's a bit too long to wait for Yen to get his act together (the car chases and gunfights are also fun, but not the best you can do with Yen) but the final scene is really something to behold. Finger licking for every action (/fight) fan.

3.5*, Yen is a great talent who contributes something essential to action cinema, Yip fits him nicely in his films. Only they often fall into the same trap as the duo Woo-Fat. Drama is not the ideal partner of this kind of films/actors.

Story is too substandard and too much attention is given to it. Fortunately, there are enough action scenes, especially towards the end, that keep things lively.

Save the best for last, shall we say. It takes quite a while before Yen really makes you feel the knees, while the developments obviously don't have that much to offer. Visually, yes; Yip often has something nice in store when it comes to locations, backgrounds, colors, light, etc., which means that it doesn't become a dull affair.

Makes such a car chase, which is not so special, also a lot cooler. In the end, it is still a bit of a wait for the inevitable confrontation and that is also extensively discussed. With, among other things, a very clumsy throw and a wildly distributing Yen, it is certainly worth it. The mother is endearing and the end credits a nice dessert.
