A glimpse into the emptiness of a hipster life. The anomie of elite life existence.
Hardly any emotions to be seen in Heidecker, not in the most crazy cases. In search of authenticity everything becomes 'too little'. In my opinion Alverson wants to show the transience of a social role, which is always accompanied by desires. Even if you don't have one, as you might think from the cynical hipster mentality, you are willing to pay a lot to get a taste of the (real?) life of a taxi driver.
Very entertaining and deliberately calmly filmed, with occasionally really disturbing images, but all in all, as Inland Rabbit already notes, really special. Also the subtle use of fairly underground artists like Bill Fay and Gardens & Villa makes the whole thing work even better.
This is emptiness in imagery, spacious 4*.

The Comedy.
A film that is mainly about boredom, emptiness, numbness, lack of commitment and in a way the ridiculousness of the contemporary time. Somewhere I read that this makes a statement about our generation but as far as I'm concerned that is not involved at all but is mainly about the main character himself.
This is a film that will appeal to very few people. You have to have some kind of cynicism or nihilistic mindset to find this funny on the one hand and to appreciate it on the other. The comments and conversations are often incredibly sarcastic and venomous but at the same time you have to see the sadness behind it.
I think the soundtrack is strong and fits the images well. The film takes its time for everything that fits the content but certainly not a film for the general public. Slow, very little action and conversations that most people will raise their eyebrows at and ask in surprise what it is about.
