Clouds of Sils Maria plot

At the height of her international career, actress Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is asked to star in the play that made her famous twenty years earlier. At the time, she played Sigrid, a seductive young woman who drives her older boss Helena into a game of love to suicide. Now she is offered the role of the older, frustrated Helena. For rehearsals, Maria travels with her assistant and friend Valentine (Kristen Stewart) to Sils Maria, a remote village in the Alps. Jo-Ann Ellis (Chloë Grace Moretz), a Hollywood starlet who is constantly embroiled in scandal, will play the role of Sigrid. Faced with the face of youth and ambition, Maria finds herself confronted with the finiteness of her own career and explores the boundaries of friendship and love.

A film that evokes boredom from the start. Endless chatter, with a high - what -is it- actually- about? degree.

Bright spots are when the ladies shut their chatter heads and watch the mountains/film, which makes the film somewhat palatable.

Personally, I found Binoche weak, because not believable, a bit overacting too.

Agree with Zeriel. And Stewart who has to wear glasses to match this intellectual nonsense. Can't understand why this sleep-inducing film about the professional and private midlife crisis of an aging actress won the competition in Cannes. I didn't find it interesting anywhere and not worth it.

A simple story at first sight, which is mainly brought with dialogues. You have to love it, but those dialogues are quite interesting. The story unfolds into a few questions about acting and art. Binoche as Maria Enders who puts a lot of herself into a role. It then becomes a challenge when you play in a piece where she becomes the opponent of the character she used to play. Her new role will therefore have to play against her own past. Reality and fantasy seem to overlap.

Binoche has the great Kristen Stewart as a co-star in this film and she especially lifts the film. The 2 know each other so well, but because of the new role, the differences also surface. Differences about the future, about acting, about the film world, ...

In itself a fascinating film with the script and especially Stewart as strong assets. It remains a small film that leaves a lot open to the viewer. It never really overwhelms. But good enough to keep your attention. Here and there a nice shot and interesting dialogues. Better than expected.
