Amy plot

"The girl behind the name."

The story of six-time Grammy winner Amy Winehouse, in her own words. Using never-before-seen archive footage and never-before-heard songs, it paints a picture of the world we live in in a way that few others can. Amy Winehouse sang from her heart and through her musical talents she tried to analyze her own problems. The combination of raw honesty and great talent resulted in some of the most original and beloved songs of our modern age. However, her enormous success also had a downside: a relentless and overwhelming media attention combined with her stormy relationships and changeable lifestyle led to a tragic end to her life.

'Amy' (2015) doesn't feel right. On the one hand, the documentary does indeed very poignantly sketch the decline of a star who is visibly suffering from celebrity culture, but on the other hand it is not averse to a little exploitation. To be honest, I often failed to see why the private and archive footage of extremely personal moments, in which the singer felt safe among friends or family, had to be shown at all. Or why both intimates and caregivers (a drug consultant and a doctor, of course) provided extensive text and explanations for specific situations in which Amy Winehouse was shot by the denounced press mosquitoes. The documentary shows sides of her addiction problems that I didn't want to see or hear. Is this fair, confrontational and intimate!? Or is it secretly not yet another way to continue 'our' perverted fascination with the anorectic superstar who languished under her fame, while she could sing so unearthly beautifully!?

"I don't think I'm going to be at all famous. I don't think I could handle it. I would probably go mad," Amy Winehouse says before her big break. "Amy" is a sad documentary that aptly shows the loss of a young, vulnerable and sensitive woman with a special talent. I like listening to Amy's music. I thought she was a special, unique and creative person. It is terrible that she struggled with addiction and an eating disorder, and that she was often portrayed as a kind of caricature. The documentary made a deep impression on me and it really touched me. I allowed her more peace in her life, true love and the right help and attention. What I do like is how the lyrics of her songs connect to her life. Two years ago I went with my mother to an exhibition about Amy in the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam, which included clothing, photos and handwritten texts of hers. It moved me and made me feel close to Amy. This documentary also gave me that feeling. Close to her, with respect for her. More people should have had that. 4*

Although the music Amy Winehouse made was never my favorite genre, I must say that I was quite impressed with her second record. It's been a long time since I heard this one, but as far as I can remember the songs were all of high quality. The documentary entitled Amy, provides a great opportunity to listen to her music again, and also gives a personal insight into her life.

I agree with the comments that the singer has been primarily responsible for her own demise. But that some of her surroundings, especially in combination with her celebrity status, have given her more than just a push towards her own abyss, I also find very clear.

The documentary is also a textbook example of how mean and judgmental people can be about one another. Nice and easy to do that about someone so far away from you. The fact that it is a celebrity makes it an extra easy target. After all, your whole life is on the street. Maybe people were so jealous of her success that they subconsciously hit her extra hard?

However, people forgot the seriousness of her problem. The fact that she struggled so much with herself, which was reflected in her alcohol and drug addiction, naturally came from somewhere. And you really can't always blame that on a troubled personality. Often many people only come to this realization when it is too late. Or when a documentary is made that exposes the truth..

For me it is an important reminder never to judge someone else when you don't know someone's whole story and it is precisely this reminder that makes this documentary more than just a glimpse into the life of a talented artist.

4.0*
