Senna plot

"No Fear. No Limits. No Equal."

The story of the life and tragic death of Brazilian Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna. We follow his debut and the decade-long sporting feud in the 1980s with then world champion Alain Prost and his fight against the political games in sport. In his private life, however, he is a modest, introverted man who donated millions in his native country and philosophized extensively about his life after the sport.

I just missed the Senna period. I only started F1 shortly afterwards with the world titles of Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. I can still remember the images during the 1994 World Cup final when the Brazilian national team paid tribute to the other multiple world champion Ayrton Senna. They were poignant and sad images, beautiful images also full of emotion and respect for the great champion that Senna was for his country.

Senna has become a nice documentary about the legend Senna. As with many biographies, the story is often too colored or lacks the necessary nuance or context to get a really accurate picture. Often the truth is a bit too boring and for the sake of the story is here and there exaggerated in both positive and negative sense. The docu cites the rivalry between Senna and Prost, but highlights this too much from the point of view of the good and the bad guy. Senna was certainly not infallible, neither on nor off the track, although he was certainly a very charismatic personality.

Nice editing with also fascinating interviews and beautiful race images. Always nice to see those things again. Yesterday marks the 25th anniversary of Senna's death. Nice of the Flemish TV to pay tribute to him in this way by broadcasting this docu again. Senna's death will also always be linked to the death of hapless Ratzenberger. It's also nice to include him in the documentary. It was therefore interesting that Senna was one of the champions of more safety in F1.

“There's only one word that describes Ayrton's style, and that is "fast." He would take the car beyond its design capabilities. He would brake later, fly into these corners where the car was just over the edge, and somehow he could dance a dance with that car to where it stayed on the track.”

Superb documentary about Ayrton Senna. I only really started following Formula 1 after Senna's death, but his reputation is impressive and his legacy is great. Not only as a Formula 1 driver, but also as a man who did a lot for good causes and was a real hero of the Brazilian people. His battle with Alain Prost is interesting and you can see that there was respect, but also that they could sometimes drink each other's blood.

But that Prost was ultimately one of the carriers of Senna's coffin says a lot about their relationship. The racing scenes are beautifully shot, and the amount of material that Asif Kapadia had access to is overwhelming. The moment you see Senna close his eyes just before the start of his last race (Imola) is an emotional moment. In any case, you can see that a thundercloud hung over the drivers during that entire weekend (also due to the death of Ratzenberger), and Senna's face and nervous behavior speaks volumes. Senna is a beautiful portrait of a calm and religious man, who became a hero of the people through Formula 1. And one of the best riders in the history of the sport.

Just like 'Amy' a very impressive documentary. A fragile portrait that perhaps zooms in too one-sidedly on Ayrton Senna as an innocent genius, as a victim of a system, as a subject of an ambition inspired by God and a whole nation. Big words, but ah, they seem out of place here!

The finale in particular is blood-curdling, even though every spectator knows what's about to happen. Asif Kapadia adds a touch of transcendent mystique – a passage from the Bible, a close-up neurological homicide without a broken bone in the whole body! – which amplifies the emotional impact. Furthermore, the director does not expressly judge: not about Senna's desires that reach beyond the horizon (hybris?), not about the political scheming surrounding Formula 1 sport. That paves the way for a strong emotional charge, actually a sledgehammer blow. On the other hand, Kapadia misses the opportunity to clarify how F1 became completely different after Senna's death. Although that might have been too pedantic?

Be that as it may, quite upside down with this chunk of cinema.
3.5*
