Foo Fighters: Back and Forth plot

The group Foo Fighters was founded in 1994 by Dave Grohl, the former drummer of Nirvana. Seventeen years later, the band is ready for a new, seventh album. And looking back. Interviews with the musicians and unique archive footage guide us through the history of the group. Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins and Chris Shiflett tell the whole story, from the tragic end of Nirvana, through group member auditions and first club appearances, to mega concerts for more than 80,000 fans. The film culminates in a unique 'making of' of the band's new record: Wasting Light. Before that, Dave Grohl teamed up extensively with producer Butch Vig for the first time since Nirvana's Nevermind twenty years ago.

Simple documentary. Unfortunately after seeing this film you get the impression that the Foo Fighters consist of a bunch of simple souls, a bunch of naive children in the guise of men. There was really zero depth to this film. Grohl does have a nice charisma, and he tells the stories well, but they hardly know any substance. It was more propaganda for the Foo Fighters than an actual objective look at it. In addition, it is actually very sad that their 'best' albums were written in a very short time. Now that I listen to them again, I also notice how simple and meaningless those albums are.

This is just a promotional documentary for the latest Foo Fighters album. The film is nothing more than a bone-dry accumulation of encyclopedic facts about the history of the band with a slew of meaningless archive material through it. You don't empathize with Dave Grohl, you are not involved in problems and even juicy details and anecdotes are absent. Grohl himself, whom I highly value as a musician, is also very aware of the promotional purposes and gives a rehearsed talk in which everything is 'beautiful', 'good' and 'interesting'. The film then ends after 75 minutes of encyclopedia in a meaningless behind-the-scenes of the new record. It will be quite an experience for Foo Fighters fans; for ordinary music or film buffs, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth is unimpressive and a saltless addition to the music film genre.

Reasonable documentary about The Foo Fighters. Simple in structure: the history of the band is told chronologically by means of talking heads, interspersed with archive material. Fortunately, people talk openly about the bad times and changes within the band. And of course the music is just good. As a fan, of course, a must-see.
