Anvil: The Story of Anvil plot

"At fourteen, they made a pact to rock together forever. They meant it."

At fourteen, friends Robb Reiner and Steve "Lips" Kudlow make a pact to keep rocking until they die. They are hailed as the gods of Canadian metal and influence an entire generation of musicians including bands like Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. Despite this, however, they never quite break through themselves. Now they are in their fifties and they hope to realize their childhood dreams with their thirteenth album and a European tour.

Excellent documentary about the metal band Anvil who have been trying to reach the top for 30 years in vain. The optimistic singer is both a parody of himself and very human. The many situations are extremely entertaining and humorous, but sometimes also have a somewhat sad and pathetic undertone. And many of the scenes are actually even more fun if you've seen This Is Spinal Tap.

On a second viewing I couldn't get rid of the impression that some scenes were set up to put the band in the spotlight again.

Good entertainment.

A documentary ala The King of Kong. It's all a bit like "laughing with losers", but at the same time the gentlemen of Anvil also know how to charm. They are guys who just want to live for what they love to do. Not that that is so unique of course, but they clearly lack the knowledge and wits to bring it to a successful conclusion and have therefore been struggling for 30 years without really getting recognition.

At the beginning of the documentary a number of well-known names (since I knew them and know nothing about metal at all, they must have been the most famous names) who put the band in perspective. Was a bit weird because you wonder why it wouldn't have happened if they really had been so influential.

Although you gradually find out that the gentlemen are simply too rude to maintain themselves in an industry that is played on the cutting edge. When you look at the stupid decisions they make every now and then, or the silly fights they get into ... I can hardly feel sorry for it.

What remains of course is a very funny documentary with two brilliant protagonists. Because in addition to their defects, they are also just two simple souls who don't hurt so many people and go full for their passion.

3.5*

Well I actually didn't think it was a great documentary, it doesn't help that I don't like their music and the two silly metalheads are not such nice characters that you really start to empathize with them. The naive singer (he reminded me of the school bus driver in The Simpsons: Otto Mann) my nerves and the drummer made me think he would rather play in another band for 30 years. The boys record a record and tour Europe nicely, but instead of being at peace with that, they want to make it big time if necessary. It is sometimes poignant, although at times it is too much on top ('attendance: 173').
