The Major and the Minor plot

"Is she a kid - or is she kidding?"

Susan Applegate has been trying for a year, but after having to shake off an overly pushy client on the first day of her umpteenth job, she's had it with New York. She decides to go back home to Iowa. She set aside $27.50 in an envelope for this a year ago, but has not taken inflation into account. With this money she can only buy a ticket for a 12-year-old. The conductors smell danger and she takes shelter in Major Phillip Kirby's compartment. The situation is complicated by the presence of Kirby's fiancé and her sister.
