Moana 2 plot
"The ocean is calling them back."
Moana, the princess of the Polynesian island of Motunui, receives an unexpected call from her ancestors. She then travels to the distant seas of Oceania and to dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever experienced. I remember Moana mainly for two things. This was really the first time that cgi made a body look lifelike. The contours and shapes of Moana's arms and shoulders really managed to touch that lifelike (the head was still a bit cartoonish). Also the color of the skin and how the sun hits it and makes the skin shine: excellently done.
But Moana was also the film that concluded a series of strong films. That film was quite watchable but not really special and apart from one song also not special in that respect.
Now part 2. If the House of Mouse had only one sequel as main film for decades (Rescuers Down Under), Moana 2 is the third in a short time. That also shows the searching form of Disney (in the coming years Zootopia 2 and even Frozen 3, the billion-dollar film of recent years, will be released).
Nevertheless, this film is really redundant on every level. Boring above all and extremely safe. Songs don't stick, the story lacks a certain justification, the villain on duty is invisible (literally by the way because he doesn't appear on screen). The film is mainly about Moana and all the supporting characters could have easily been removed without you missing anything. Even Dwayne Johnson is very flat in his voice acting. Jokes are aimed at children and often not funny.
Fortunately the film is not too long and the technical quality of the animation is fine, but that was also the case with part 1. And sometimes the film is even ugly (those sea monsters, that storm at the end) A disappointment on every level. 1.5*

I had hope going into these films, but this film is a disappointment on every level.
It's not a sequel, it's just an unnecessary extra movie that wasn't needed. All Disney needed to make this movie was money.
Because it is a copy, Disney is looking for a safe option: a boring film by choosing a safe story.
Luckily the film was short (1.5 hours) and that's a good thing because if it had lasted a little longer I would have walked away long ago. I wanted to do that in the first 20 minutes but I still gave it a chance.
A VERY BIG missed opportunity for disney.....
