A bit last minute and unexpectedly stumbled into the theater because my other film was fully booked. A bit of a different mindset, but all in all it was okay. Content-wise maybe not the most innovative and you can certainly ask yourself some questions about that unnecessary prequel stuff. Disney has found another cash cow.

Visually it looked nice. As if you were watching a National Geographic documentary. Who says Disney, also says singing. I found the songs mediocre to bland one by one. Not really one that sticks or is catchy. Fortunately it was limited to a song or 4-5.

Timon and Pumbaa are redundant and annoying. It would be nice to know the background of Taka, Zazu or Rafiki, but I'm not convinced we really needed to know that.

You get what you expect and then in abundance too. Indeed the songs were now a lot less, they are not really catchy. It has also been said that Pumba and Timon are more annoying than funny. Furthermore the story is very predictable, but let's be honest, we know that with such a 'sequel'. Furthermore beautifully made and designed with a bit too much camera circle movements around the animals in my opinion. The scene in the ice cave is beautiful, very stylistic.

Well, not a monstrosity as I had feared, but also not a decent film as I had secretly hoped because the reviews weren't necessarily bad either.

Visually reasonable with now and then a nice shot and technically it looks nice (the faces do show some emotion) but still I had a somewhat uncanny feeling about it. This was just too much between clear animation and photorealism and because of that it was all a bit of an uncanny valley with now and then ugly colors too (think of that flower bed in the beginning).

The story may not have a name but it does the trick. As a viewer you mainly wonder when it will be made clear that Taka is actually Scar. You know that from the first meeting (with those nails in Mufasa's paws). Halfway through, the filmmakers themselves make a nice joke of it and at times that works too. Especially when Taka goes to help the white lions and his voice changes, more towards the intonation of Jeremy Irons.

It's all quite watchable with some great action sequences (like the chases), the songs are reasonable and the film does little harm. However, the middle section lasts too long and that song between Mufasa and Sarabiis not the best song but also really too much at that moment - there the film really drags and goes from just about sufficient to just about insufficient.

The highlight was the first second by the way with the expected tribute to James Earl Jones. And I think that says enough about the rest of the film. 2.5*.
