Don't know what's wrong with this Beautiful remake of a classic, now 25 years ago, which knows how to entertain in terms of beautiful images, fun scenes and a story that is known, but still manages to captivate. This remake is possible in itself because it has been a while and especially that the live action is still something else. Of course the original has its charms, but this print also has its strengths such as the breathtaking images and a somewhat darker approach to the story. Humor is less present, but also logical given that approach. By the way, there are still plenty of funny scenes in the film. And how I love that great voice of James Earl Jones as Mufasa. A voice you know immediately. Awesome ! A great film and a must to see in the cinema. 8/10

Mediocre.

After the fun Jungle Book, I was really looking forward to this one, even though the 1994 original is a favorite, unlike the 1967 Jungle Book. The opening is identical to the original.
Afterwards, a faint copy follows, supplemented with some extra scenes, making this remake almost half an hour longer. Unfortunately, the added is just bad. There's a little more time for some strong woman nonsense. Beyoncé can whine around with an extra song and they manage to make 'Can you feel the love tonight' happen during the day(?). Apart from the fact that Beyoncé also rapes that song ('Look at me, gasping, adding extra force to my words!'), that scene is too rushed and is nothing compared to the original. But also existing classic scenes such as the death of Mufasa simply cannot match the original.

Anyway, visually the film looks fine. The CGI is at an all-time high, although I don't agree with every change in design - Scar loses its flamboyant look and becomes more of a hyena. There is not much to experience with the voice cast. Seth Rogen is, however, a good choice as Pumba and also nice to hear James Earl Jones back. However, I was most looking forward to Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, but it sounds a bit like poor man's Idris Elba as Shere Khan, and it definitely doesn't come close to Jeremy Irons.

2.5
