Superhero dominance continued at the box office into the 2010s from the noughties when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was born.
Officially, the highest-grossing movie of the 2010s was Avengers: Endgame which grossed $2,797,800,564 in ticket sales. The end to Marvel's Infinity Saga is also the second highest-grossing movie of all time, with only James Cameron's Avatar earning more money to date.
From one to two in the 2010s, we jump from one juggernaut franchise to another, as the reboot of Star Wars - Star Wars: The Force Awakens - grossed $2,068,223,624. In at number three is the movie that preceded Endgame - Avengers: Infinity War ($2,048,359,754).
Two other reboots make up the top five - Jurassic World and The Lion King.
Undoubtedly, the 2010s was the era of the franchise as every single movie in the top 10 was part of an existing intellectual property. It is the success of these movies which is why studios are so desperate for reboots, sequels, prequels and 'requels'
There are only two animated movies in the top 10 - The Lion King and Frozen II.
The MCU's dominance over the box office in the 2010's is remarkable as Marvel has no less than FIVE movies in the top 10, with Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther also proving money-making epics alongside Infinity War and Endgame.
There are only two movies in the top 10 that were not made by Disney or a Disney-owned company.
