Very positive surprise this Moana (Moana reminds me too much of this: Deftones- Moana - YouTube.
Animation is very good quality, main character is nice and the chicken is a great sidekick (luckily it was the chicken and not the pig).
It's also nice that the whole thing was performed without a fairly standard Disney romance and that it presents itself as an adventure film. That keeps it all fresh and its own position.
Moiana can easily compete with Frozen and is perhaps better on a number of points. Tangled is still out of reach, but that's okay.

Remember who you are
After the overrated Frozen, Disney comes up with Moana, with characters who, except for the snowman Olaf, were a lot nicer than the princes and princesses from Frozen. At least, based on the trailer because once I had seen the entire film I actually liked it even better than I initially expected. What I found particularly special was that the many songs only got on my nerves to a minimum. Only one of the first songs in the village was a bit too much for me. Most of the other songs surprised me in a positive way. Still, it's nice if you're watching a half musical.
Where this Disney also excels are the many fun characters that the film has. From Maui and a very stupid chicken as a sidekick, to a gang of "pirates" and a huge crab. They are all well thought out and well written. And finally, of course, Moana herself, who I like a lot more than the average Disney' princess.
Moana gets a lot less attention than the blown up Frozen, and in my view this is unfair. Moana had the same creative feel to me as Wreck it Ralph and I hope Disney continues to poop out more of these kinds of titles. These examples are then not only for your little brother or sister, for example, but also for yourself. So a win-win situation.

Irresistible animation film. The world of Moana is beautiful, the characters are fun and the humor is excellent. With the music and the very strong voice of actress Cravalho as perhaps its greatest strength.
Moana is a cool heroine and especially the interaction between her and Maui (and chicken Heihei of course) makes for a lot of entertaining scenes. The interplay between Cravalho and The Rock is excellent, and as a viewer you like to join them on a journey to save the world. The story is pretty standard, but that's not where Moana's strength lies. It lies in the infectious interplay between Cravalho and The Rock, the music, and the beautifully designed world. And the fun that comes from it.
