Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has confirmed that his next project will be filming the live-action adaptation of Moana.
The animated Moana movie was a huge success for Disney and grossed $682 million on a budget of around $160m. It received critical acclaim for its plot, emotion, the performances of the voice cast and the original songs.
It tells the story of a young Polynesian girl and "daughter of a chief of a coastal village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fit."
In April of 2023 it was announced that a live-action adaptation would be produced with Johnson acting as executive producer and reprising his role as Maui, whom he voiced in the original.
"I'm deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen," The Rock said in a statement after the new movie was announced.
"This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people's grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me. I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavour because there is no better world for us to honour the story of our people, our passion and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people."
On Jimmy Fallon this week, Johnson confirmed that he will soon commence filming the new Moana now that both the actor and writer strike are over. Thomas Kail will direct while Lin-Manuel Miranda will return as the songwriter.
The Rock then treated the audience to a rendition of 'You're Welcome' from Moana.
