Die Xue Jie Tou plot

Three best friends Frankie, Bennie and Tom are forced to flee Hong Kong when they accidentally kill a notorious gang leader in a brawl. Via a smuggling route they end up in Saigon, where violence is the only language that GIs, soldiers and gangsters still understand. With the help of the mobster Luke, the three rob a local drug lord and, after a fierce firefight, make off with a chest of gold. What the friends just don't know is that there are CIA spy photos in the chest of gold.

I just finally watched it and at the beginning I didn't know where the movie was going to go. You will be dragged into all the events of the three friends. There is a lot of action in this and this is also well filmed. You notice very strongly the good bond between the three. I am certainly well entertained by this movie. It was usually also tasty over the top. How the three or four of them shot a small army to pieces, wonderful! At a certain point I started to empathize with the main characters and because of this I also developed a kind of hatred for Little Wing. And yet he still has a sense of friendship in him.

The scenes in which prisoners had to shoot other prisonerscould have been made a bit more dramatic. I didn't really get any feeling about it which is a shame.

I think the title is very well chosen. I kept wondering what it meant until you find out at the end genius idea. By the way, I thought Fai was long dead, because he had already been shot and now also got a head shot afterwards. In the end, the trip that was supposed to make them rich didn't pay off much. 2 are dead, 1 has lost his arm and the other has lost his 2 best friends. Enjoyed the movie a lot and I read here that it is very similar to 'The Deer Hunter', so I'm going to do that too just a quick look.

In the review!

In any case, to open the new year in the film field explosively.

Normally I'm not into action movies at all, but somehow Asians are much stronger at it than their Hollywood colleagues, and the film also hints a lot at The Deer Hunter.

It's Woo so the first fragmentary 8 minutes in Hong Kong is not much more than a reason to get to Vietnam in 1967 as soon as possible and then the action, bullet and blood fest will erupt at breakneck speed and with lots of slow motion in the actual action.

Again great! The John Woo masterpiece!

A John Woo with title and cover art that led to expectations. John Woo of course all too well known from action spectacle Face/Of, The Killer and the A Better Tomorrow series, so I was curious but I didn't quite get what I was hoping for.

The beginning feels especially messy, but that can still be overlooked. Naturally, Woo wants to introduce the viewer to the three friends and their band. Yet the beginning tends very much towards a cross between West Side Story and the necessary melodrama. With the murder it gets a little better, which is still waiting for the gentlemen to end up in Vietnam. There is an improvement to a certain extent, but it does not really interest you with these Asian drama queens.

The music, to really seize the biggest flaw, is horrible. What a sentimental about melancholic whining j * sister! Special is the riot police in shorts. On the other hand, there is a ton of violence that mainly gets the upper hand over half of the film and does not hurt at all. The theatrical split within the trio and the ridiculous finale with its moronic demolition derby does that again.

It may be clear that this film, where every victim falls like a dying swan, has not exactly convinced me, and there are quite a few points to mention for that. Still, I want to give the film a second chance because there are still good moments in it. Well, for now a 3.
