Picked this one up and it wasn't a bad movie, but I didn't really like it either. It was a little less my thing anyway. The film offers a bit more than a regular action film, but it didn't really drive me wild.

Good for once, but don't need to see it again.

Quite stylish John Woo film in which I recognize many Face/off moments, but perhaps also see the necessary inspiration for Nicolas Winding Refn with his Only God Forgives. Although nice entertaining film not completely convinced of the whole.

The violence and shooting scenes can be called excellent, it is a pity that the sound is very bad and the sound quality during the shootings sounds cut off. Despite the fact that it all sometimes tends to overacting and certain things are too dramatic, the film also has the necessary humor and atmosphere. The tension is built up excellently on a number of occasions. Especially the scene on the beach, after the speedboat chase, is of great beauty and incidentally a scene that I can remember from a film program at the time, or Goderie or Mioch, I dare not say that. The shooting scene at the end is beautifully designed, but the resilience of the men is a bit exaggerated.

Nevertheless, if it's your genre, Dip Huet Seung Hung is a very stylish and entertaining film that gets a three and a half. Had the sound been better, I could have given the film a four.

It's been quite a few years since I last saw this John Woo classic. At the time, Dip Huet Seung Hung (in English, The Killer) from 1989 was partly responsible for the director from Canton, China (but mainly raised in Hong Kong) making his Hollywood appearance not long after. Something that would result in the successful Blockbuster Face Off.

Although Dip Huet Seung Hung (The Killer) is over thirty years old, the film has withstood the test of time well in its main features. Both the choreography and the camera shots of the action scenes, especially the shoot-outs, still look stunning. Those aspects manage to impress me even more than during my first viewing. A good example of this is when hitman Jeff (Chow Yun-Fat) tries to escape from the police after an assignment and makes eye contact with a small, playing girl on a beach. Through some magnificent close-ups, information is exchanged without text, without wanting to reveal too much, and a brilliant and even moving scene is created.

It is therefore hardly noticeable that the story about a hit man who injures a singer in a shooting, then tries to help her while several parties are hunting him. Director Woo keeps the pace almost constantly high and stuffs the film with fast-paced action. The lack of depth is therefore hardly noticeable, as is the sometimes somewhat questionable acting. That does not apply to Chow Yun-Fat, a perhaps not too versatile actor, but perfectly cast in the lead role here.

What's left is just wonderfully grim action flick that I've come to appreciate more and more over the years.

Very good.
