Biographies are not really my thing, that's for sure. There are a lot of boring parts in the film, the music is very mediocre and however you look at it, the film is quite clichéd.

Day-Lewis's acting is not bad. Especially since I regularly see and hear someone with exactly the same ailment. Not really my kind of movie.

Daniel Day-Lewis is a great actor, and he steals the show here too. Unfortunately, the film is disappointing in other respects. The story did not surprise me. And there are no individual scenes that stand out. Or it has to be the scene in the restaurant. The low point was the fight in the pub. This scene seemed very forced and unnecessary to me.

Pretty standard drama.

The story is actually all misery. Of course it's about Christy Brown and it's sad to see how he lives his life. Yet Christy Brown (and by extension his condition) is not really accessible. It was difficult for me to bond with him. Sometimes I sympathized with him, but sometimes he got on my nerves, as it were. Something like that could well be the intent of the film; as a viewer you experience what the family had to go through.

I can be brief about the acting. I have a hard time saying that Daniel Day-Lewis puts on one of the best acting performances ever. And that's because he doesn't seem to be acting at all. You would think that the protagonist really has the same spastic condition. Day Lewis = Christy Brown.

The rest of the cast does a very good job as well.

Jim Sheridan's camera work is a bit too sober. The film was released in 1989, but resembles one from the mid-'70s. Because it looks so dated, the feeling of the poor, large Irish family is reinforced.

The music is quite doable. Nothing too bombastic, just quiet in the background.
