Krótki Film o Milosci plot

Nineteen-year-old Tomek is in love with Magda, a woman in her thirties who lives in a flat opposite the one where Tomek lives with his mother. He spies on her through his telescope and calls her to hear her voice - without saying anything back. He sends her fake calls to get her to the post office where he works. After a while he makes himself known and tells her everything. Magda is first angry and then bewildered. She no longer believes in love and cannot understand the boy's passion. She decides to seduce him to prove that true love doesn't exist...

I'm a lot less enthusiastic than most of the comments here before me.

A drama about a somewhat eccentric young man, seemingly stuck somewhere in puberty, and his obsession with his beautiful neighbor. After a dramatic incident, the tables are turned. That's about it.

I liked the films from Kieślowski's colour trilogy much better than this psychological love drama (without the romance), which I can neither get excited about nor cold about.

A rather minimalist film about a young voyeur who spies on his beautiful neighbor, in the style of Hitchcock's "Rear Window." But it doesn't stop there: he does everything he can to get close to her, even manipulating her life to get closer.

What I struggled with most were his random confessions and Magda's reaction, which was quite forgiving. It's strange, considering how much has been manipulated. It's actually part of the film's psychological mindf*ck when the roles are reversed.

Quite restrained and excellent acting too. All in all, a captivating watch.

A better film than A Short Film about Killing, but it doesn't reach the level of the Trois Couleurs trilogy.

It's always interesting when a large portion of the film is viewed through a telescope. There's a bit of Rear Window and Body Double in there, but the voyeuristic style and the relationship between Magda and Tomek also remind me a bit of Polanski.

Whether Magda's forgivingness toward Tomek, even falling in love with him, is entirely believable, remains to be seen. But Kieslowski manages to create a captivating and, at times, suspenseful story. Grażyna Szapołowska is perfectly cast to make Tomek lose his mind. Another amusing moment is when the landlady peeks across the street while Tomek is with Magda. It turns out she's not a good housewife after all.

Kieslowski remains an interesting director. Not that his films are always hits, but his style often manages to charm me.

3.5*
