From their meeting at primary school, Otto and Ana immediately develop a special bond. When Otto's father marries Ana's mother, they become brother and sister - and later lovers. But their ways part. After the death of his mother, Otto breaks contact with both Ana and his father. But he cannot escape chance, avoid fate, and break their unending love. Their lives remain inextricably linked.

A special film by Julio Medem who, from the perspectives of Ana and Otto, tries to reveal their love story in a dreamy way. Especially their childhood and thus the first part of the film was very strong with the scenes in the back seat of the car as the highlight. After that my attention slackened a bit and the film rippled on in my eyes.
Medem provides an excellent character development of Otto and Ana, but this is at the expense of the other characters. Otto and Ana grow closer and their secret love is deep and pure. In the beginning, love arises because their names are eel dreams (just like the director's name, by the way) and because she sees her deceased father in him. Later, her love for Otto becomes more real. Cinematically, it all looks OK too. The images in Finland are beautiful. However, the film also depends on coincidences and that suits me less.
Certainly not a bad film and all in all a nice viewing experience, but the expectations were perhaps too high. The love story is above average and beautiful, but for the rest I had too little feeling. All things considered floating between 3.0* and 3.5*.

Nice review.
The film is a child of its time, judging by the fairly forced plot, which pushes the characters in a clear direction. Personally I can appreciate that, but anyone expecting a natural romantic drama will probably be a bit disappointed by the way in which the characters keep finding/losing each other.
Visually it is neat, although I do not understand why a cold/blue color palette was chosen. Acting is very good (including the kids), soundtrack also above average and the plot also sticks, although there are regularly large time jumps.
Was a bit afraid of it beforehand, but it's a film that still stands as a house as far as I'm concerned. Enough quirky details, the finish is polished all the way and the finale is there too. Great work, soon Medem will be dusted again.
