Prestigious adaptation of the famous novel by Dumas, which rightly got a film length of three hours (like most and better classic film adaptations of this epic), and in which the execution of the revenge got the most attention. It is beautifully filmed, with a good choice of locations and actors who do not disappoint, with a Niney who played reasonably surprisingly. The feeling of the old-fashioned adventure film is there. And yes, a book adaptation remains a shortened reworking and can therefore never contain the depth of a book. I accept that.

It remains a brilliant story of betrayal and revenge that focuses here mainly on pathos, more than on action and spectacle. Romance, loyalty, forgiveness, tragedy... it is a rollercoaster of emotions. It is also somewhat difficult for the director to make the length of the period over which it is set, feel. The story moves forward quickly: four years pass, then ten years, then another five years. One of the few points of criticism that I can think of. I have seen a few film adaptations of this story before, and I can say that this revival is one of the best I have seen. Didn't bore me for a minute. Interesting detail: the director's father, Denys de la Pattelière, once directed the TV series himself in the late 70s, which is also considered the most faithful.

Le Comte de Monte-Cristo remains a very successful story. This French interpretation was really beautiful in terms of images, setting and atmosphere. The acting was also very convincing. I can really appreciate these kinds of films, you can see that real time and energy has been put into it.
