The animation is better than ever and Ben Whishaw's voice acting has lost none of its charm, but by swapping London for Peru and a formulaic adventure film for children, this is significantly less successful than the two previous films in the franchise. Paddington [Ben Whishaw] and the Brown family travel to Peru because Paddington's aunt Lucy [Imelda Staunton] has disappeared without a trace from a bear care center. They are taken in by a nun [Olivia Colman] who is behaving "suspiciously" and get help from skipper and adventurer Hunter Cabot [Antonio Banderas] and his daughter Gina [Carla Tous] in their search for El Dorado. The references to the likes of Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre and Raiders Of The Lost Ark are amusing, as is Banderas' double role (as his ancestor from a painting), but Paddington and slapstick don't go well together.

Actually just a wonderfully naive and optimistic film. They have just lost guides and boat in the middle of the Amazon and are going after a bear full of courage. Let's be honest: this whole film makes no sense at all. But it is charming, you notice that the actors also enjoy playing (although the son and especially the daughter are snowed under in this story). The film does need a bit of spice now and then because it is all very tame, but fortunately Banderas still takes care of that a bit. 3.0*.

After having seen the first 2 Paddington films on VTM Cinema the last few days (unfortunately the dubbed Flemish version and not in the original English), I saw this one in the cinema (Imax). I thought it was the least good film so far. Too bad that Mrs. Brown is played by a different actress this time. The children have also grown up now and it all seems less spontaneous. The story is mainly about Paddington who discovers his origins after his Aunt Lucy has disappeared without a trace in Peru. Antonio Banderas and Olivia Coman were also not really convincing as villains, unlike Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant in the previous films. El Dorado turns out to be a city of oranges instead of gold in this film?? The story is clearly much less well put together. I also miss the London atmosphere from the previous film a bit. The film is still a solid and entertaining family film for young and old, but less so than the previous one.
