In order to escape debt collector Darius Blank [Ian Hanmore], Mickey [Robert Pattinson] and Timo [Steven Yuen] have signed up for a space mission to a planet where former presidential candidate Kenneth Marshall [Mark Ruffalo] hopes to start a colony. Mickey has volunteered to be an "expendable" without reading the job description. Inconveniently, this means he'll be used for life-threatening missions and experiments, and has already been "reprinted" 15 times with his knowledge and consciousness intact. The trouble comes when he's reprinted while miraculously still alive. If Joon Ho had studied Robocop (an obvious inspiration) he'd know that satire and comedy are two very different things. The black humor misses the mark completely, Pattinson’s speech is distracting, Ruffalo looks ridiculous with his clichéd whitened teeth, and even Toni Collette (as Marshall’s wife) fails miserably with her over-the-top acting. Tim Key as a man in a pigeon costume is the best example of Joon Ho’s clumsy, clumsy use of comedy to destroy all satirical elements in this abject failure.

After seeing the trailer I was very disappointed with this film. I had the feeling that you were watching a prologue for two hours.

As you can tell from the title, Nicky dies 16 times. Then Nicky dies 17, and shortly after that 18 (also no spoiler because that can be seen in the trailer). With the trailer you have actually seen the whole movie in 2 minutes.

Mwoh. The film never really catches fire. Full of nice ideas but mediocre and not very original in the execution. Visually there is not much to experience either. The voice-over is a bit annoying, the acting is not very special in general and especially the humor does not succeed. The film seems more made for children (what did Ruffalo think he was doing with this interpretation?) than actual satire or let alone a gripping film. Professionally made and the pace is still okay, which makes those 139 minutes (which are too many anyway) easy to sit through, but that's it. 2.5*.
