Brother Bear plot

"Nature Calls"

A long, long time ago, at the end of the Ice Age, there were once three brothers. When the eldest was killed while hunting a bear, the youngest, Kenai, took revenge on this animal. As punishment, the Gods themselves turned him into a bear. Kenai now learns about the animal world in a completely different way and befriends the young grizzly bear Koda, who teaches him the real meaning of brotherhood.

Still a lesser Disney. After the adventure films Atlantis and Treasure Planet (and snack Lilo & Stitch), Disney is going back on the safe side. That is to say, a moralizing road movie with animals and corny music, this time by Phil Collins. The digital drawings are at times too brushed off and then poorly developed again. It lacks the necessary charm. I miss the creativity in this animation. It may be well maintained, but doesn't really want to come loose.

I had seen the movie once with the commentary track, spoken throughout the movie by those two moose. That commentary is full of humor and can make the film good. 2* so for the film itself, the one with commentary track deserves more.

I actually didn't mind. This period is not really known as a high point for Disney, but I thought the setting, the characters and the animation were all okay. The story got a little sweet at times and those terrible songs (like here by Phil Collins) can be stolen from me, but in the end I had a great time with Brother Bear. Yes, the melodrama is occasionally thick, but if you bite through it, there was still quite a bit to enjoy. With good sidekicks and the occasional action, maybe a dime a dozen Disney but sometimes that's just enough.. Especially with foresight of what's to come (dragons like Home on the Range and Chicken Little ) this was just fine.

Gray medium.

Disney can do better. The setting is otherwise nicely designed (and just suits me), but actually the film is tape work on every level. That feeling prevails. From a bland story about the very mediocre voice acting of Joaquin Phoenix, among others, to the songs. The latter seems to want to live on the success of films such as Pocahontas or Tarzan. As if they made some sort of mixture of that and then just thought it would work anyway. Not so.

2.5
