Outstanding movie in which a prosecutor bails the woman he's trying to convict. An excellent given for a romcom that is also well developed here (as well as the characters). There is enough progress in the story and enough happens. Sometimes a bit sugary, but partly because of the cast they get away with this. A narrow 4.0 stars. I wonder why there isn't a remake of this yet.

A Preston Sturges script packed with imaginative dialogue and two stars at the top of their game in an unpretentious comedy. Fred MacMurray plays District Attorney John Sargent who must try to convict shoplifter Lee Leander [Barbara Stanwyck] on the eve of Christmas. When Lees attorney O'Leary [an unforgettable Willard Robertson] claims in a very impassioned plea that Lee has been hypnotized, John seizes an opportunity to suspend the case so that he can bring in his own "expert." This way everyone can go home early, but for Lee it means she will be stuck during Christmas. That doesn't sit well with John, so when he finds out that Lee's mother lives close to his family, he offers to bail her out and drop her off. Naturally, something blossoms between the two during the car ride and MacMurray and Stanwyck manage to find the perfect balance between comedy and sentiment. There is a hilarious supporting role for a cow and Stanwyck shows in the piano scene why she is considered one of the greatest film stars of her generation. The chemistry between the two protagonists and the excellent supporting cast do the rest.

As a romcom and a Christmas film, it is a great success, although the Christmas part is somewhat limited, furthermore a wonderful experience thanks to the excellent playing by Stanwyck and Macmurray, but sentimental it is of course a good thing.
