Oh dear. Watching this movie this morning I really thought this must be the worst Bond by far, but the opposite seems to be the established opinion here. Terms such as trailblazer, source of inspiration, etc. are frequently reviewed here.

What really bothered me were the sped up action scenes, the way they were portrayed, the incredibly cliché story and finally, but certainly not least, the insanely bad soundtrack. In combination with the many rather laughable 'gadgets' you get a film that seems to parody itself several times.

I think the plot has been rehashed so often that one can almost predict with one's eyes what the next scene will bring. Admittedly, you shouldn't look for originality in the Bond series, any more than a horror atmosphere in Mega Mindy or humor in Tarantino's latest, but a few surprising elements can never hurt. All the clichés are incorporated, and what remains is a sleep-inducing boring story, which should not be allowed for a spy thriller. In addition, the action scenes and the 'gadgets' seem to come straight out of an 'Suske & Wiske' comic.

Connery is also about as flamboyant as the average farmer's son, which can also be said about his acting. Anyway, allow me to end on a positive note; I found the beginning & end credits to be very stylish and handsome. But if this is the most positive thing I can say about a 112-minute film, I really can't help but give a poor score.

1*

James Bond is a hero who always wins. He is the perfect middle ground between gentleman and action hero. Women succumb to him in the blink of an eye. The early Bond girls bear little emancipated first names such as Honey and Pussy. Sometimes they're hired by the bad guy, but they can't resist James' charm.

Goldfinger is the best villain. The fact that he cheats without scruples and cannot take his loss says a lot about the personality of this homo ludens. His plan is shrewd, because he takes inflation into account. Yet he makes the same mistake as any villain: Instead of liquidating 007 whenever he has the chance, he takes the time to talk and explain in detail how he wants to achieve world hegemony. Harold Sakata, a professional wrestler, plays his muscular accomplice Oddjob. Together they form the classic combination of brain and muscles.

A fixed pattern is followed, with action scenes in the beginning and during the climax, interspersed with witty dialogues, romantic scenes, useful gadgets and beautiful locations. When Bond has 58 seconds left to defuse the bomb, it actually takes him 1 minute 53; those seconds are wrong. It's funny that someone else eventually turns off that button on the side.

Besides the best villain, this one also has the best song. Shirley Bassey's voice echoes over the chromatic Bond motif, and the lyrics mention Midas, whose touch turned everything to gold.

That this is definitely one of the best Bond films ever became clear last night after review.

This film has everything a good Bond film should have and what it has become so popular for.
First of all, a fantastic title song, one of the best and most popular Bond songs out there. Furthermore, Connery is better than ever and faces a great opponent in the person of Auric Goldfinger. This in turn is also one of the most famous Bond villains, mainly because of his statement 'I expect you to die', which has rightly become a classic.

Goldfinger's henchman, Oddjob, is one of the best and cutest henchmen ever seen in a Bond film. A memorable opponent for Bond, especially for his bowler hat that allows him to do great things.
Furthermore, this film has a number of memorable moments: the golf scene, the killed girl who is completely painted in gold and of course the card scene at the beginning of the film. 'Q' is also present who has an Aston Martin with a number of gadgets ready for Bond.

Only downside was the ending. A well-prepared plan by Goldfinger, but I thought the attack on Fort Knox took too long, plus the execution was not quite clear.
Still, this is definitely top three material because Goldfinger is an excellent mix of all the ingredients that a Bond film should have.
4* stood and remain standing.
